WordPress eCommerce Plugins Compared

e-Commerce plugins are between the most used and popular of all plugins for WordPress. Just to name one, WP e-Commerce, the 1st shopping cart plugin ever made for wordpress, it has been downloaded over 2 million times up to date.

However in today’s comparison chart we are not even going to evaluate WP e-Commerce. Even though it is probably still the most complete solution as far as features, in our opinion the plugin core should have gone through a major redesign already a couple of years ago. Browsing around on other blogs and forums, you’ll notice that it is a pretty common opinion throughout its users.

We will instead compare the main features of 4 other plugins. WooCommerce, Jigoshop, MarketPress and Cart66.

For the most demanding E-commerce site admins, we have edited the following comaprison chart, where the most important features of the 4 plugins have been exposed.

Given that all the contestant seems to offer more or less everything an ecommerce site would need, we focused the evaluation on 4 key points:

1) Usability
2) Tax and shipping handling / Payement Gateways
3) Product variations / Product bundles / Inventory Management
4) Unique features

Comparison Results

The overall winner of our research is WooCommerce, but mainly because of its popularity and a bigger base of 3rd party developers building extensions and themes built around it. The result is an incredible number of extension and themes, some built by highly reputable developers.

Jigoshop, from which WooCommerce was forked, is basically as good and Cart66 or Marketpress can do an excellent job too.

A special mention goes to MarketPress. While it still lacks in extensions such as payement gateways and shipping modules, it is the only one developed with WordPress multisite in mind. MarketPress allows anyone to create a Etsy like network of stores or an Ebay clone. Where the Network admin may collect commisions from everyone’s sales.

Jigoshop has a similar extension called Product Vendor (price $99), which allows other users to sell products on your site. However it is not a multisite soluition, where the main site serves as a marketplace. For this reason it is limited in my opinion.

Hi, thank you for the comparison. I have a related question… How did you make the comparison table? Is it hardcoded or did you use a plug in or some other easier way? Thanks!
